Worthen graduated from the University of Arkansas where he received an undergraduate degree in Business Administration. He received his law degree from the same University in 1968. He received his license to practice law in Arkansas in 1968 and his Oklahoma license in 1970. From 1968 to 1969 he served as law clerk to the Honorable Oren Harris, Chief Judge of the United States District Court, Western District of Arkansas and a Judge of the Easter District of Arkansas. After active duty in the Oklahoma National Guard, he practiced in Ardmore, Oklahoma from 1970 to 1973.
